Did You Know?
President Abraham Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a day of National observance back in 1863. In that same year, it is thought to be our state of Montana’s first documented Montana Thanksgiving in the small, but busting town of Bannack.
Thanksgiving was a new National observed day, and Bannack’s residents—mostly scrambling gold miners probably didn’t take the time to settle down for the day, gather friends and prepare a wild Montana turkey for a Montana Thanksgiving feast.
Now families look forward to a lengthy cooking and gathering day. In just about any town in Montana, around noon you can step outside your house and smell the roasting vapors from ovens, barbecues, fire pits, fryers and slow cookers.
Montanans use the Thanksgiving holiday and vacation days to have wonderful feasts, close the main hunting season, open the ski resorts that have enough snow, and invite friends from around the Nation and the world to gather in our state for a wonderful Montana Thanksgiving.
